The education system in Malawi is one of the lowest in the world. The reason is poorly trained teachers and overcrowded classrooms (up to 100 students per class). We believe quality education is an important basis for promoting economic growth. Having education as a key focus, Extending Hope opened their first primary school in September 2017 in the region of Blantyre. At school students are taught the basic educational skills like reading and writing. We are also looking to build a playground where students can have fun-filled exercise during their school day. As well as, planning school-sponsored field trips for students to continue their educational learning outside the classroom. We focus on teaching a basic education because it is one of the ways to combat poverty in the country. As many children don't have the possibility to go to school and learn which is a necessary requirement for any better job or future.
Our goal is to bring students and teachers together and to provide a basis for quality education in Blantyre. Thanks to the active support of teachers from Switzerland and other NGO, regular teacher training courses in methodology and didactics are provided to local teacher. After two full years of training, Teachers are able to graduate with a Teachers Diploma.
At the moment, our school is operating out of a modern house and is able to offer classes to 30 students. We hope to grow our school size within the next few years. Last year, Extending Hope was able to purchase a plot of land opposite the schoolhouse. We have already begun construction on a larger school building, which has been designed for about 300 students. Once open we will bring on more local teachers. Interested teachers can already take part in the further education courses and training.
The Schools Principal, Nadja Levson, is the Co-found of Extending Hope with her husband Decent Levson who is Extending Hope Malawi Director.
